Power constraints in Sampaje valley
Unbundling of KEB & formation of Regional Distribution companies:
- SAMPAJE ( Sullia Taluk) village was electrified in the year 1970 and later extended to Sampaje ( KODAGU) in the year 1971. 2x 5 MVA 33/11 KV Substation installed in Sullia was feeding the border villages of Sullia and Madikeri Tauk. All the farmers growing Arecanut crop and later with mixed crop of Cocoa,Pepper,Cinnamon, Clove, Vanilla took maximum advantage of this facility.
- By 1990, peak load on this Sampaje feeder of Sullia substation catering power to industrial area near Arambur , Aranthodu , Thodikana, Sampaje(DK) villages of Sullia Taluk ( Dakshina Kannada) AND PERAJE, Melchembu, Sampaje(KODAGU), Koyanad,Kallala/Arekallu of Madikeri Taluk ( Kodagu District) exceeded due to extensive use of power for irrigation of Areca/Coconut/ Cocoa gardens. Hence KEB arranged for study of system and approved establishing 2x5 MVa 33/11 substation at Sampaje(TCM 108/27-12-1995) and upgradation of Sullia station from 33 Kv to 110 KV. Project was sanctioned by KEB in 1999 ( KEB/B19/7684/98-99/8.04.1999) under REC funds.
- Due to YLD (yellow leaf disease) of Arecanut stretching from KOYANADU up to Aranthodu limits, all areca plantations were removed and replaced by Rubber. Areca planted in conventional paddy fields are also now replaced by Rubber. Use of electricity for irrigation decreased. With increase in urban population and use of Electricity in residential houses and commercial installations in villages & settlements along NH275 from KOYNADU to GOONADKA with commercial complexes, workshops, Cyber centres Petrol stations at Kallugundi and Sampaje gate, the demand for power in peak & energy started to rise.
- Need for system improvement: Establishment of Substation in SAMPAJE is felt essential to improve voltage regulation and reduce system loss in 11 kv feeders and to avoid unforeseen interruptions to urban and rural areas, create infrastructure for development. Due to system constraints in upstream systems of Sullia in Netlamadnur 220/110 Kv station, Madavu 110 KV line & Madavu 110/33 KV station & delay in construction of 110 kv Madavu-SULLIA line due to ROW problems enroute in Anegundi RF AND KANAKAMAJALU JALSOOR limits, MESCOM carried out extensive improvements to 11 Kv distribution of Sampaje fed from Sullia and transferred the loads of Urubylu Chembu MelChembu, Kodagu Sampaje villages of SAMPAJE HOBLI to Madikeri 66/11 KV substation.
- CHESCOM Madikeri extended 11kv Madenadu rural feeder from Devarakolli up to Koyanad to link the tail end of SULLIA_SAMPAJE feeder and continued feeding KODAGU loads from Madikeri SS on F8 feeder resulting in poor voltage regulation and energy loss.
- At the request of CHESCOM MYSORE, KPTCL has proposed to extend 66 KV Kushalnagar- Madikeri line from Madikeri with Terminal bay to facilitate equitable distribution of power to all remote villages of SAMPAJE Hobli of Kodagu District.
- CHESCOM Madikeri Division is examining following improvements to distribution system till substation is installed at SAMPAJE. i)Installation of switched line capacitor Banks.ii) To instal Voltage Regulator.iii) Reconductoring of trunk line conductor from weasel to Rabbit. iv) Segregation of O&M-2 Rural loads of Madenadu to make F6 an express feeder.v) To provide Auto Reclosure to major spur lines. vi)To instal 11 KV 1+3 RMU at Sampaje load centre near O&M unit office to find immediate solution to problems
